40 years ago: KU community opens new year with convocation

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 30, 1971:

Kansas University students gathered in Allen Fieldhouse for the 106th annual convocation, where they were challenged to combat an “educational stalemate” faced by the university. Chancellor Laurence Chalmers urged members of the KU community to make “every effort to insure that our limited resources are used in the most effective manner possible.”

Haskell Indian Junior College began classes today with 1,035 students. Additional students still enrolling this morning were expected to push the total past 1,100.

Defective wiring caused a fire in the Jayhawk Bowling & Trophy Co., 804 Massachusetts. The damages, generally confined to the workroom, amounted to an estimated $45,000. The firm’s owner, Charles Hardman, praised the fire department for saving the building as well as an alert police patrolman who had turned in the alarm.
