From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 29, 1986:

• In a recent 24-hour period, a possible record number of babies had been born at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. “We don’t keep records like that. But, yes, it’s close if it’s not a (one-day) record,” Judith Hefley, director of community relations at LMH, had said. The obstetrics department had been very busy with the deliveries of five girls and five boys, and the nursery, with a capacity of 24 bassinets, was populated with 17 babies. By comparison, births during the previous month had averaged three to four a day.
• In a sad occurrence that would break the hearts of antique-car collectors, about 55 cars had been destroyed in an early-morning fire at a storage building near McLouth. The building and dozens of antique autos dating back to 1924 had been lost in the fire, according to owner J. C. Rogers.
