25 years ago: Voters to decide again on Holcom Rec Center

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 28, 1986:

  • Lawrence voters were being asked to vote for the second time on the proposed Holcom Recreation Center. Since first being approved in April, 1985, the project had increased $300,000 in costs. City commissioners had unanimously approved placing on the November ballot a request for the issuance of up to $1 million in general obligation bonds for construction of the center.
  • Workers at Kansas University’s Allen Fieldhouse were hard at work sanding and repainting the home floor for the 1986-1987 basketball season. The center would feature a map of Kansas instead of a large Jayhawk, and the blue letters spelling out “Kansas Jayhawks” had been moved to the playing surface from their earlier position on the sidelines, where they had often been obscured by press tables.
