25 years ago: Lawrence man charged in arson, murder case

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 26, 1986:

  • A 21-year-old Lawrence man had been ordered to stand trial on charges of felony murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated arson. David Winebrenner, 21, had been accused of intentionally setting a fire on July 14 at 3028 Rimrock. The resulting blaze had killed 34-year-old Mark Blair, a seven-year veteran of the Lawrence fire department, and had destroyed the home of Winebrenner’s parents, who had been in the house when the fire had started.
  • At a recent meeting, the Kansas State Board of Historic Sites had nominated the Eldridge Hotel to be listed as a national historic site. Built in 1924 and undergoing renovations, the building was the fourth Eldridge Hotel to be built at Seventh and Massachusetts. The only obstacle to final registration was the paperwork, according to Martha Hagedorn, architectural historian for the Kansas State Historical Society.
