A 19-year-old female Kansas University student was taken to a Kansas City area hospital by helicopter ambulance early Thursday morning after suffering serious injuries in an apparent fall just east of the KU campus, according to emergency and KU officials.

Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical division chief Joe Hoelscher said once medics arrived on scene about 12:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Tennessee Street, they determined the victim possibly had multiple broken bones. Hoelscher said additional information about how the fall occurred or what led to the incident was not available, and Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said officers were investigating it as a medical emergency. He said Thursday there were no apparent witnesses.

Early Thursday morning, Lawrence police Sgt. Craig Shanks said the woman had not been cooperative with officers and medical staff as they responded to the incident.

The woman was transported to the parking lot of Lawrence High School, where a LifeStar helicopter took her to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

Jill Jess, a KU spokeswoman, confirmed the woman was a student, but police did not release her name.
