40 years ago: Grant Township residents overcome by dust
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 24, 1971:
- Residents of Grant Township were complaining of dust-storm conditions near their roads. Road improvements on the highways usually traveled by work trucks had forced City of Lawrence sanitation trucks and private garbage trucks to cut across dusty township roads, causing residents along those roads to be “overcome with dust, dust, and more dust.” About 30 Grant Township residents had presented a petition to Douglas County Commissioners complaining of the problem.
- A guilty plea had been accepted for Thomas J. Gaughan, 22, a member of the University of Kansas football team, in Kansas City’s U.S. District Court. Gaughan had pleaded guilty to one count of possession of stolen mail matter. He and former KU football team member Dennic Cohlmia were charged with possessing two pay checks issued to a teacher who lived in Lawrence during the summer. Neither man had been charged with stealing the checks.
