25 years ago: KU official disagrees with ‘brain drain’ data

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 23, 1986:

  • Responding to a recent state survey, a Kansas University official said that figures indicating a ‘brain drain’ from state schools were ‘misleading.’ Sally Bryant, assistant to the dean of educational services at KU, was referring to the results from a survey mailed to 159 National Merit semifinalists. Of the 102 semifinalists who responded, 58 percent had indicated that they would leave the state to attend college. Ms. Bryant also said she was disturbed by comments two of the semifinalists had made concerning the “lack of aggressiveness” Kansas universities used in recruiting them. Asserting that KU had mailed the students “a wide variety of information,” Ms. Bryant added, “They choose to not even read the state mail because they have their heart set on Stanford and Yale.”
  • Lawrence resident Jim DeHoff was one of seven people appointed to serve on Kansas, Inc. — a quasi-public, non-profit advisory committee created to oversee the state’s economic development.
