25 years ago: On-campus housing fills up as new school year approaches

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 16, 1986:

With classes scheduled to get underway in the coming week, residence and scholarship halls on the Kansas University campus were already full to capacity. Stouffer Place, on-campus housing for married students, had reached its capacity of 1,200 people, while Jayhawker Towers, with a capacity of 1,050 students, was 95 percent full. Officials at two property management companies also weighed in, saying that their apartments were either full or very close to full. Housing officials at KU insisted that there was nothing to worry about, however. Spare areas in residence halls could be converted to temporary living spaces, said Dave Ryan, assistant director of Residential Programs. Ryan added that there were usually several incidents of students who changed their minds about their housing options after arriving at campus, sometimes opening up spaces for others.
