25 years ago: New Dillon ‘Superstore’ opens at Sixth and Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 15, 1986:

  • The new Dillon “superstore” at Sixth and Lawrence Avenue had formally opened this week, with company executives and Lawrence city officials on hand to celebrate the opening. The 57,000-square-foot grocery store was said to be one of the biggest Dillon stores in the state. Kansas University cheerleaders helped greet the store’s first customers, and KU’s Big Jay also showed up and wandered the aisles. An eight-food submarine sandwich, made in the new store’s deli, and a huge cake contributed by the bakery added to the festivities.
  • Traffic troubles were predicted for 19th and Massachusetts as a project to widen the intersection got underway. Traffic was to be reduced to one lane on 19th Street about 250 feet in both directions and for about 300 feet on Massachusetts on both sides of 19th. The improvements were to include widening Massachusetts by about 12 feet so that left-hand turns could be installed, as well as widening 19th Street by about eight feet to meet state codes.
