40 years ago: Escaped cattle lead police, citizens on chase through central Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 14, 1971:

Two young Shorthorn cattle, weighing between 900 and 1,000 pounds, had escaped from a truck near the North Second Street railroad underpass in North Lawrence. Two hours later, they had attacked five persons, three vehicles, and reportedly “strolled through Central Park” before being caught. After first being spotted by officers west of TeePee Junction, the cattle had run south, and officers and volunteer citizens had not been able “to prevent the animals from running across the bridge.” One had run south on Vermont and then east before being caught near 1116 Del. The other had run through Central Park, hitting a car and a motorcycle while being chased by officers and citizens before finally being roped by Lawrence Police Patrolman George Temple between houses at 819 and 823 Ark. Details on the animals’ escape from the truck were not known, but the driver of the vehicle was cited on charges of “spilling a load on the highway” and “allowing animals to run loose.”
