100 years ago: Longtime Lawrence business up for sale

August 13, 2011

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 13, 1911:

“In tonight’s issue of the Journal-World one of the oldest businesses in the city of Lawrence is offered for sale. The clothing business of J. House & Son. For the last three years this business has been conducted by R. E .House who has lost his health in the strain of business and is on the verge of a physical breakdown at present. He has been forced to give up the business and will leave the city as soon as the store is disposed of in an effort to regain his health. The clothing business was established in 1862 by Jacob House who came to Lawrence from St. Louis. The House clothing store is an old land mark in Lawrence and this city will be sorry to see the Houses leave here.”

“Arrangements have been completed for a race between two balloons at the Merchants Association’s big picnic that is to be held at Woodland Park next Thursday for the farmers of Douglas county and vicinity. This promises to be the best thing in the line of aerial exhibitions that has ever been held in this county. The object is to give the people all that there is in the thrilling sport of ballooning.”

“The fifteenth reunion of the 5th Kansas Cavalry will be held in Lawrence on October 5th and 6th of this year at the Eldridge Hotel. An effort is being made to locate all of the old veterans of this regiment who are living and the place of death or burial if dead.”
