Strangers provide headstone for eccentric Salina woman known as ‘Lady in Black’

? An eccentric Salina woman who became known as the “lady in black” has not been forgotten since she died in 1982.

Strangers have donated $1,000 to provide a headstone for the grave of Leona Bradford, who walked the Salina streets for years clad head to toe in black.

Some Salina residents knew her as Viola Darling, while others simply called her the “lady in black.”

The Salina Journal reports that a mention of her on Facebook in May stirred those who remembered her to raise money for a headstone. The headstone has been installed. A memorial service is planned for later this month.
