Topeka ? A district attorney has ruled that the Kansas State Board of Education didn’t violate the state’s open meetings law when members ate together at a Topeka restaurant.

Matt Patterson, assistant Shawnee County district attorney, wrote in a letter this week that six members of the 10-member board did not violate the law when eating together in March.

Former Topeka Mayor Doug Wright had contacted the district attorney’s office about the meeting. He said he wasn’t sure the dinner violated the law, and wanted the district attorney to make a determination.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that Patterson said board members contended they did not discuss board business at the dinner. He said the open meetings law doesn’t prohibit members of a public body from sharing a meal.
