Flags stolen from Lawrence VFW post

August 10, 2011

Members of the Lawrence Veterans of Foreign Wars post are working to get new flags to fly in front of the post hall, 138 Ala., after someone stole an American flag and POW/MIA flag last week.

“We were surprised to see that it was missing, and we’re taking all the necessary steps to get both flags back up as soon as possible, especially prior to our POW/MIA ceremony Sept. 16,” said Fred Shockey, commander of the Alford-Clarke VFW Post No. 852.

According to a Lawrence police report, someone stole the two flags, metal clips from the pole and cut part of the flagpole rope between 8:30 p.m. last Thursday and 3 p.m. Friday.

Police estimate the damage at $80. Shockey said the flag thefts were disheartening, but members believe it was likely a prank. The post was working to replace the flags and rope as soon as possible, although he said it would be an unplanned expense for the post.

Sigmund - you can call 843-2078 or drop by the VFW after 4pm or mail what ever donation to 138 Alabama, 66044. We appreciate your generosity in advance! We were totally in shock when we realized someone would steal the American flag and the POW/MIA flag from the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Go by the post during normal business hours, and give them the money. P.S. thank you from a local Veteran

Anyone know how I can contribute the $80 to get the flags replaced?

I've been a member of the VFW since 1972. The flags can be replaced but it is a shame the culture of todays humans can not and will not be.

Sounds like something the Tea Party terrorists would do.

And to think that someone would take the flags from a soon to be Bert Nash property.

I second what everyone above is saying. Stealing the flags was wrong and absolutely senseless.

Unfortunately, even if they are caught, probably nothing will be done; and if it is, they will have no guilt and feel no shame.

I'd like to run whoever did this cowardly deed up a flagpole.

That is just wrong! What a foul thing to do. So senseless. Just echoing what others are saying but this is wrong.

Probably some dumb kids thinking they are being rebellious. Doesn't excuse them, but at least explains the senseless actions.
