Joplin schools get new desks and chairs from Leavenworth

? Leavenworth voters who approved a bond issue that helped replace desks and chairs at the city’s high school also helped the Joplin school district.

After hearing about the damage a May 22 tornado did to several Joplin schools, Leavenworth’s assistant principal Christina Lentz thought the school’s good fortune could be shared with Joplin.

The Kansas City Star reports that groups of Leavenworth athletes and Junior ROTC students on Friday loaded about 300 desks and 150 chairs, which arrived Saturday in Joplin. Western Extralite Co. and Lanier Trucking paid the shipping costs.

Joplin district spokesman Jim Dunn says the furniture couldn’t have come at a better time. The district is scrambling to open school next week, despite having several schools destroyed or damaged in the tornado.
