40 years ago: Deluge of applications floods law schools
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 6, 1971:
“Blizzards” of applications had descended on the country’s 146 accredited law schools, with the most selective schools receiving more than 10 applicants for each spot. Kansas University Law School was no exception to the rule, having received about seven applications for each place in its entering class for Fall 1971. Two hundred students were to comprise the freshman KU Law class after 1,400 students had applied. In 1970, there had been 650 applications; the year before, 350. Dean Martin Dickinson had been fielding calls from disgruntled parents saying that Kansas residents had been rejected in favor of out-of-state students; however, Kansans made up 80 percent of the freshman class. Dickinson added that 12 percent of the new class were women and 20 percent were veterans.
