Forum on Saturday to focus on issue of redistricting

A public forum on redistricting will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

Corey Carnahan, research analyst with the Kansas Legislative Research Department, and Burdett Loomis, professor of political science at Kansas University, will speak at the forum focusing on the once-a-decade process of redrawing boundaries for congressional, legislative and State Board of Education districts.

Legislators will approve district maps in the 2012 legislative session. They are currently holding hearings on the issue with a meeting set Sept. 2 for Lawrence.

The forum is sponsored by the League of Women Voters Lawrence-Douglas County.

After hearing recent reports that Republican leaders have considered moving urban Wyandotte County from the 3rd U.S. House District to the mostly rural 1st U.S. House District, Kay Hale, Lawrence-Douglas County League president, said she was concerned that “politics might override common sense.”
