From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 4, 1911:

• “Mayor Bishop and the councilmen are much interested in the proposition to build a storm sewer to do away with the unsightly and unhealthy open storm sewer which follows the ravine from McCook field to Central park at Henry street. This is certainly a work that is much needed from every standpoint and it is to be hoped that the people will co-operate enthusiastically with the council in its proposed work.”
• “The police last night received a call to 813 Alabama where some one was trying to gain entrance to the A. E. Lowerey home. The officers responded to the call, but in the meantime the man on the outside of the window had been frightened and was gone when the police arrived. They found where he had cut a hole in the screen preparatory to reaching through and unhooking it.”
• “There was a rain last night but no one knows how much because there was not a drop at the University observatory where the measurements of the rainfall are taken. Downtown there was quite a shower but it seems that it did not extend all over.”
• “Marion, Kan. — David Powell, Jr., accidentally shot himself through the right lung while hunting frogs with a .22 caliber rifle yesterday and probably will die.”
