Prosecutors file 3 charges against Lawrence man accused of running from officer

Douglas County prosecutors Tuesday filed three charges against a 20-year-old Lawrence man who was accused of running from a police officer after a reported theft Monday from Walmart, 3300 Iowa.

Prosecutors charged Oscar R. Gonzales with theft, obstruction and misdemeanor battery of a law enforcement officer. He was also arrested on several warrants. Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said Walmart staff members alleged Gonzales and a woman left the store without paying for several items. An officer located a vehicle matching the description given near Clinton Parkway and Kasold Drive, but Gonzales jumped out and ran away before the officer caught him in the area, Sarna said.

During a hearing Tuesday a judge set Gonzales’ bond at $2,000, cash or surety. Police later located a 21-year-old woman and arrested her in connection with the case, but she posted $2,500 bond and was given notice to appear in court Aug. 15. Prosecutors can file charges against her before then.
