Lawrence man, 26, arrested on charges of raping girlfriend

Douglas County prosecutors Wednesday were reviewing information following an arrest of a 26-year-old Lawrence man on charges of rape and domestic battery after his girlfriend alleged Tuesday that he sexually assaulted her.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said officers were called Tuesday evening to Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s emergency room after a 22-year-old Lawrence woman alleged that her boyfriend had assaulted earlier Tuesday at a residence in central Lawrence.

Sarna said Wednesday that the woman had minor physical injuries that were not life-threatening. Officers interviewed the suspect and arrested him Tuesday night.

He remained in the Douglas County Jail Wednesday. Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said Wednesday afternoon that the man likely wouldn’t make a first appearance in court until Thursday afternoon.
