100 years ago: Downtown business owner plans to sell out, devote time to chicken-raising

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 30, 1911:

“Another man has succumbed to the wiles of the incubator and the chicken coop and expects to sell his business in order that he may put in his full time on the farm, which he has secured near town. Twelve years ago, Vic Keller started his place on South Mass. street, and during the years that followed he made it one of the best known spots in the city. Vic’s Place was the gathering place for the students for years and it is known from one end of the state to the other. Many persons have wanted to buy the stand, because it has always enjoyed such a splendid trade, but no price would be set by its owner, until the call from the hen yard became too strong. Mr. Keller began raising poultry on a small scale a year ago and to use his own expression ‘has gone crazy over chickens.’ As the result one of the most profitable stands in town is for sale.”
