Police investigating cause of single-vehicle roundabout accident at Lake Pointe Drive and Clinton Parkway

April 29, 2011

Lawrence police Friday were investigating to determine whether alcohol or speed were factors in an early morning one-vehicle accident in southwest Lawrence, said Sgt. Matt Sarna, a police spokesman.

Sarna said a 48-year-old Lawrence man was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after the 2010 Ford truck he was driving at 3:20 a.m. Friday struck the roundabout at Lake Pointe Drive and Clinton Parkway.

The man’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Sarna said.

The driver is suspected of leaving the scene of an earlier accident after 2 a.m. in the 2200 block of Iowa Street, police said. A light pole and parked vehicle were struck in the accident.

The guy was (I am guessing) drunk, but 10 years from now, they will still be hitting that roundabout. At night, if you are not paying attention, It's dangerous.

Ron Holzwarth 7 years, 1 month ago

Yes, roads are dangerous that way. If you're not paying attention, you can drive right off of them, and wreck your car.

PalinPalms 7 years, 1 month ago

exactly, and that is why the government should not be in the business of building and maintaining roads. that kind of lazyness wouldn't be excepted in the real world. When private companies own all the roads only the good awake people will be using them and that will be much betterer

Ron Holzwarth 7 years, 1 month ago

Obviously, he simply wasn't able to keep his truck on the road for some reason or other. And, the reality check is that, when you can't keep your vehicle on the road, you collide with something.

They are referred to as "traffic calming devices" for a reason. It's a good thing the traffic was calmed when he went roaring through, because of what else he might have collided with on down the road.

A kid on a bicycle, maybe?

I'm not opposed to roundabouts in principle, but that one out on Clinton Parkway is just about pointless. (The ones on Indiana are pointless.)

nut_case 7 years, 1 month ago

True - when they are built to improve the flow of traffic, they can actually be quite nice - and I would rather run through one of those as opposed to an intersection. Though when they are built specifically as impediments to traffic flow - as they are around here, they can be a nightmare to navigate.

Eric Neuteboom 7 years, 1 month ago

Agree - the Indiana ones are horrible! I can't even make a left-turn at those in my truck, unless I cheat the corner. And I can't tell you how many times I've nearly been hit by idiot students running the stop sign one. Ugh!

As are the ones on Harvard. I'm thinking there was a moving van that got stuck in one last summer.

Just looking at the headline I thought it was going to be some kind of "Drift King!" fail.

Glad the guys ok, hopefully there wasn't substance abuse involved.

There was a charming story that came out of southern California some time ago. A girl got a flat tire in the middle of an interstate. Not knowing what to do, she used her cell phone to call her mother for advice, instead of calling 911.

And then came the good part of the story - her mother got to hear the crash as her daughter was killed by a passing car!

Kyle Reed 7 years, 1 month ago

Why would you call 911 because you got a flat tire?

Ron Holzwarth 7 years, 1 month ago

Because you are blocking traffic in one of the middle lanes of an interstate, and it's dangerous to step out of your car into the next lane like she did, and be smashed by an oncoming car.

Ron Holzwarth 7 years, 1 month ago

When you are in one of the middle lanes of a 6 lane interstate, it is quite often not possible to merge to the right, the cars are bumper to bumper. This all happened in California on an interstate just like that.

Sure, pull over to the side if you can - but if there are 4 lanes of traffic between you and the shoulder, it's quite often not possible.

Ron Holzwarth 7 years, 1 month ago

Sure, pull right over and make it a multi car pileup while you're at it. She had to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder, and it was bumper to bumper.

Ron Holzwarth 7 years, 1 month ago

What she would have had to do is collide with the car beside her, and the car beside that one, and the car beside that one. And then of course, then the rear end accidents would begin.

The multi lane Interstates in California are very different than they are here in Kansas.

Ron Holzwarth 7 years, 1 month ago

She stepped out of her car into the adjacent lane to inspect the flat tire. Then, a car coming along hit her, is what I was told.

I read that sexting while driving is 10 times more dangerous than plain texting, because the steamy conversation can go on and on and on, and that didn't take into account any photography - just a joke at the end there. But I see the lady's point about doing it with large as opposed to small roads, as long as it's straight and rumble strips are included to play it safe, if texting is safe. Rumble strips also keep one awake.

Yes, because men never have illogical or ignorant opinions. What a sexist comment.

The guy was on his way to hear the frogs croaking at Clinton Lake, got disoriented a bit after drinking too much "nectar of the gods".

Randall Barnes 7 years, 1 month ago

and the car that went through the intersection of 6th and kentucky knocked over the stop sign and hitting running through and over the rock wall on the north side of 6th street. they had to be injured.

grimpeur 7 years, 1 month ago

and and and Engrish. Do you speak it?

Randall Barnes 7 years, 1 month ago

just to the point no need to add useless garbage just to please you.

gccs14r 7 years, 1 month ago

Try reading your post out loud. It sounds like gibberish that would be spouted by an excited three-year-old.

Liberty275 7 years, 1 month ago

A three year old wouldn't know the names of the streets.

Rando, I don't quite know what you said, but it sounded exciting.

I had to search the article out after seeing the skid marks and sure he didn't do anything for the resale value of his truck

I live out there and people are ALWAYS hitting that roundabout! People don't seem to understand how to use a roundabout, not to mention they try to speed through it going 40mph. I think the city is out there at least once a month fixing something on it. Sober drivers are bad enough, let alone drunk ones like this guy.

gccs14r 7 years, 1 month ago

I don't remember if there are any streetlights illuminating it or not. If there aren't, maybe there should be.

xclusive85 7 years, 1 month ago

There are streetlights. Not to mention, you pass 5 signs about the roundabout on the way into Lawrence. I haven't counted the ones going the opposite direction.

Kris_H 7 years, 1 month ago

Some roundabouts are great, like the one at 6th & Wanamaker in Topeka. It's much faster now getting through that intersection, and there are others that are similarly useful. The ones I hate so far in my life are the one coming onto the turnpike at the West Lawrence interchange (why?) and yes, that one near Clinton Lake.

I mean, I can drive them just fine, unlike some folks apparently, but why? Put them in where they will work better than a traffic signal, not just because you can.

BorderRuffian 7 years, 1 month ago

It must have been one of those "Oh, Sh_t moments as that car weent up, over, and off of that roundabout. Bet it bent his muffler a wee bit..

Kontum1972 7 years, 1 month ago

mb some cable barriers would be better.....obtw..its not the roundabout that causes the problem its the Dumb A** behind the wheel...chk out the tire marks on the roundabouts

K10...its not the road its the dumb A** behind the wheel...speed kills....u play u pay...

texting doesnt help either....
