From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 24, 1986:

• A man who had been accused of defacing the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Kansas City, Mo., was reported to have been listed in the current Kansas University directory as a freshman living in McCollum Hall. Students at KU, however, said that Gregory Thonen, 20, had transferred during the current semester to the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Thonen, described by his KU friends as a “very political person,” was accused of having spray-painted swastikas and slogans, such as “Sucker Memorial” and “U.S. out of Central America,” on the memorial, which carried the names of 369 area Vietnam veterans who were killed or were missing in Southeast Asia. Thonen, who had been arrested in Washington state near the Canadian border, was being held in a Bellingham, Wash., jail in lieu of $3,500 bail.
• Site plans for 56 more parking spaces at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, then located at 1100 Kasold, were approved after Lawrence city commissioners required curbing on the old parking lot to divert storm water. An existing detention pond on the property was meeting city-code requirements, but a steep grade was causing flooding problems for a house located just east of the church.
