Assault charges filed in shotgun incident

Douglas County prosecutors have charged a 26-year-old Lawrence man with three counts of aggravated assault for an April 9 disturbance in the 2900 block of Missouri Street.

Zackery Paul Martinez appeared before a judge Friday afternoon after police had arrested him April 9 when he was accused of pointing a shotgun in the direction of three people around 12:45 a.m. that day.

Police said Martinez had been involved in a domestic argument with a woman in the street and that three other people in the area thought the altercation was directed at them. Martinez is accused of going into the house and returning with a shotgun and pointing it in the direction of the three people.

No shots were fired, but prosecutors accuse him of placing the three people “in reasonable apprehension of immediate bodily harm with a deadly weapon.”

Martinez’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon in front of District Judge Sally Pokorny.
