Lawrence man sentenced to 32 months in prison for hitting victim with nearly full liquor bottle

A Douglas County judge has sentenced a 28-year-old Lawrence man to serve 32 months in prison after he was convicted of aggravated battery for injuring another man in a Haskell Indian Nations University dormitory in 2010.

District Judge Kay Huff Monday sentenced Mathew J. Pendleton after a jury convicted him in March of the lesser charge of reckless aggravated battery for the Feb. 19, 2010, incident.

Prosecutors accused Pendleton of striking the victim in the head with a large, nearly full liquor bottle and fracturing the victim’s skull “in an unprovoked attack.” Lawrence police investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Eve Kemple, an assistant Douglas County district attorney.
