Wichita ? A funeral takes place Wednesday in Wichita for an 8-year-old girl who was killed last week in Colorado, allegedly by her father.

Desirea French spent summers and occasional holidays in Kansas with her mother, Lacie Fernandez. During the school year, the little girl lived in southern Colorado with her 32-year-old father, John French Jr.

The father is now charged with first-degree murder, accused of shooting Desirea to death April 10 in their mobile home. Authorities say French also shot himself in a suicide attempt and told police it was obvious that he was the person who shot the girl.

The Wichita Eagle reports that a service for Desirea is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Central Avenue Funeral Service Chapel. Her mother remembers the little girl as an outgoing tomboy who loved music and being outdoors.
