25 years ago: Winter makes a surprise reappearance

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 15, 1986:

  • Tax Day was not the only thing chilling the hearts of area residents. Winter weather was making a brief reappearance in Lawrence, with today’s highs expected to reach only to the mid or upper 40s and a freeze warning issued for the overnight hours. A sunny high of 78 degrees had been recorded on the previous day.
  • Petey Cerf of Lawrence was urging Douglas County commissioners to support the idea of a building or renovation fund for Valleyview Care Home, the 25-year-old county-owned nursing home at 2518 Ridge Court. Commission Chair Nancy Hiebert said that there was an existing building fund, but that it was not earmarked specifically for Valleyview. Cerf pointed out that major changes were needed at the home and that many Lawrence residents were choosing the Eudora Nursing Center over Valleyview when selecting a nursing home for family members.
