40 years ago: Construction bid awarded for new library

From the Lawrence Journal-World for April 8, 1971:

After almost two weeks of reviewing bids, the Lawrence City Commission voted to award a $1,899,960 contract to B. A. Green Construction Co. Inc., Lawrence, for construction of the new city library at Seventh and Vermont. B. A. Green was also awarded a separate $10,200 contract for paving of the parking lot. The contracts had been made separately so that the money for the paving of the parking lot could be taken from the parking meter revenue fund rather than from the money approved by voters in a bond election more than a year earlier. Construction was expected to begin on the library on April 19, with completion scheduled by June 5, 1972. The total price of the project had come within $3,000 of the amount authorized in the bond election.
