25 years ago: Lawrence police department buys new motorcycles

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 7, 1986:

Some of Lawrence’s police officers were very happy about the department’s latest purchase. Two new motorcycles, Honda 700cc Magnas purchased locally for $4,500 each, had been added to the police department’s vehicles. While many officers expressed a wish to ride them, the department continued to maintain their policy allowing only experienced riders to use the vehicles. The department had always had at least one motorcycle for the past 25 years, but it had been deemed safer for night patrolmen to ride in pairs to increase their visibility to motorists. Up until the mid-1970s, the motorcycles preferred by the police had been Harley-Davidsons, but other companies had then begun manufacturing cycles that fit the needs of the department. Maj. Ron Olin said that the department also had two smaller dirt-bike cycles that were used to patrol riverfront areas.
