Weekend fire near Satanta burned 9,600 acres of grassland

? A fire that forced the evacuation of a south-central town on Sunday burned 9,600 acres before it was extinguished.

Haskell County emergency management officials say Sunday’s fire damaged five homes, destroyed about 12 outbuildings and a railroad bridge west of Satanta.

The town’s 1,200 residents were evacuated for a few hours Sunday but no significant damage was reported in the town.

No major injuries were reported.

The Garden City Telegram reports that Stevens County officials say the fire started along a railroad line in Stevens County and followed the railroad into Grant and Haskell counties.
