Topeka loses lawsuit over sewer problems
Topeka ? The city of Topeka has been ordered to fix a pipe and pay a woman thousands of dollars for damages caused by a sewer backup into her home.
A Shawnee County judge on Thursday awarded Heather Reynolds monetary damages for the city’s negligence in allowing 6 inches of sewer backup into her basement during flooding on May 7, 2007.
The city must pay $35,400 if it does work within 45 days to fix the pipe. If it’s doesn’t fix the pipe, the city will pay $49,600.
A city spokesman says the city is considering whether to appeal the decision.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that Reynolds claimed she suffered significant personal and economic harm because of the sewage problem.
