25 years ago: Bizarre claims made in trial of Kansas City man

A Kansas City man was judged competent to stand trial in connection with the death of his wife, despite his claims that vampires had sucked more than 300 gallons of his blood since he had been imprisoned. The defendant also claimed that he was hearing voices, that he was the Archangel Michael and was actually 5,000 years old, and that the judicial system was controlled by demons.

Although Lawrence had escaped a recent weekend storm, the first frost of the season was expected to occur overnight. A low was expected around 30 degrees.

Local fund-raising efforts had yielded approximately $4,000 to be donated to the victims of the recent Mexico City earthquake. Funds raised through St. John’s Catholic Church were being sent to a Mexico City charity whose main concern was the youth – from infants to teenagers – who had been orphaned by the quake. The local chapter of the American Red Cross had also received about $1,000 in donations.
