Area residents soon will have a chance to buy large quantities of mulch at the city’s annual woodchip sale.

The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department will host the woodchip sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7 and Oct. 8, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 9. The sale will be at the city’s woodchip and compost facility, 1420 E. 11th St.

The woodchips — which are made from woody debris collected by city crews during the course of the year — will sell for $10 per pickup load.

Buyers are asked to bring a tarp to cover their load to help prevent woodchips from littering streets.

The sale is operated on a first-come, first-serve basis, and city leaders warn that the sale has ended early in past years because the city sold out of woodchips.

How is the quality of these wood chips? Any reports of problems?

No, that would mean cutting down on the revenue stream they were generating. You know, for all of the tickets the cops were writing to the people leaving a trail down the street.

Polluted wood chips are in there. Watch out. This can get into your soil and damage your garden if you are growing organic or natural.
