40 years ago: Candles left burning believed to be cause of fire at Renz Apartments

A fire causing $30,000 in damages at the Renz Apartments, 1301 Louisiana, was believed to have been started from candles left burning in an apartment. The four-story, wood-and-brick apartment building was about three years old and did not have any exterior fire escapes. The earliest responders said that the metal handrails and risers in the stairways were already so hot that they were glowing red when they entered the building. Thirty persons lived in the apartments, and firemen had helped most of them out of the windows on ladders, or assisted several down from atop cars where they had jumped from balconies. Tragically, one young woman who was found unconscious in a stairwell later died of her injuries.

In London, a coroner said there was insufficient evidence to suggest that Jimi Hendrix had taken his own life. The open verdict on his death meant that the court was unable to decide the exact reason for Hendrix’s death several days earlier.
