Kansas Silver-Haired Legislature rejects resolution supporting medical marijuana

? In a close vote, the Kansas Silver-Haired Legislature on Tuesday rejected a resolution supporting medical marijuana.

The measure, which would have requested that the Kansas Legislature pass a bill allowing marijuana for debilitating medical conditions failed, 37-40.

Supporters said medical marijuana could be used to help alleviate pain for many afflictions that affect the elderly.

But opponents said more research is needed on the effects of marijuana, and that some states that have approved medical marijuana are seeing widespread use outside of pain management.

The Kansas Silver-Haired Legislature is composed of 125 representatives over the age of 60 who live in Kansas. According to the Kansas Department on Aging website, the Silver Haired Legislature gives the state’s senior citizens an opportunity to learn about the political process while highlighting importing issues on aging.
