100 years ago: 3 students missing from Haskell found in Ottawa
From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 27, 1910:
“Nice white frost was visible to early risers this morning. It was not heavy, to be sure, but it was sufficient to touch the persimmons and paw-paws, and bring the nuts rattling down in the timber along the Kaw. There were lots of kiddies who played hookey yesterday to go to the circus, and more will be seen sneaking out to the woods with a sack over their shoulder, if this frosty weather continues…. Three Indian girls who escaped from the Haskell Institute, were taken in charge by Officer Bruner this morning while eating breakfast, says the Ottawa Republic. The girls were clad only in plain blue gingham dresses. They left the institute Saturday afternoon, took the country road six miles east, then went straight south to Ottawa….
