40 years ago: Lawrence enjoys lower temperatures while East Coast experiences heat, brownouts

While Lawrence was experiencing lower-than-average temperatures, states along the eastern seaboard were suffering high temperatures and humidity, resulting in cutbacks in electrical power. The “brownouts” involved an 8 percent cutback in voltage, which was the largest cutback possible without likely damage to electrical equipment.

Recent survey results showed that the average Lawrence student-consumer’s dollar would stretch as far – or farther – than those in other Big Eight communities. For the several items and services used in the survey, Lawrence often had the lowest price tag, with less than $3 difference between the high and low totals.

It was reported from Atlanta that a 45-year-old “peanut farmer-businessman” named Jimmy Carter had won the Democrat nomination for Georgia governor.
