25 years ago: Bluffs ready for construction

A hilly area northeast of Sixth and Iowa known as the Bluffs was ready to undergo construction before winter, according to a local builder. Developers were planning to bring a site plan for an office building on the west side of the hill before city commissioners. Further plans involving an apartment complex to be built near Fifth and California were also in the works. The Bluffs had been a center of controversy from 1979 to 1982 and had resulted in two lawsuits against the city, one from local residents and one from the development company.

Kansas students were scoring slightly less on the ACT and SAT compared to the previous year, but their scores were still significantly higher than the national average.

Douglas County commissioners unanimously appointed a 19-member advisory group to study operations and costs at Valleyview Care Home, a county-owned nursing home in Lawrence.
