40 years ago: Water balloons thrown from Naismith Hall damage car
At the recent KU-Texas Tech football game, the Tech mascot – the horse “Charcoal Cody” – and his masked rider were banished to the hill behind the scoreboard at the south end of the stadium. KU athletic officials were afraid that Charcoal’s hoofs would hurt the new Tartan Turf inside the stadium. (Texas Tech won the game, 23-0.)
A local resident reported to police that two water-filled balloons were tossed at his car from an upper floor of Naismith Hall as the driver was passing the building. One balloon hit the car, causing an estimated $110 in damage.
One of two prototypes of the Concorde SST (supersonic transport) was undergoing tests in England. “You couldn’t believe the noise and smoke,” said one witness of a test landing at London’s Heathrow Airport. “Thirty houses lost slates off their roofs and residents moved immediately to petition the government to an end to this incredible monster.” The Concorde did not begin regular scheduled flights for another six years.
