Poet’s showcase: ‘A Tribute to September 11, 2001’
Think of where you were
At that tragic moment
On that bright day of morning
When the birds of death descended
Upon unsuspecting souls
Think of that moment in time and space
When men and women stepped forward
To seize the day and
do their duty in the face of fear
In that split second of time
America was again
Called upon to face
The Pearl Harbor of
A new generation
We can never forget
The unsuspecting CIVILIAN souls
In the air and in the towers
Who knew the taste of fear
A brief moment
Or felt it not at all
The NYPD blue, Firefighters and rescuers
Who felt fear and suppressed it
All too many heroes
Gone in fire
in concrete
in steel
And dust
Who taught us again a lesson
In courage too soon forgotten
Where have these new heroes gone?
To heaven and to memories
By loved ones big and small
And in the hearts and minds
Of all of us
Who care to heed our heroes call
