40 years ago: Construction nearly complete on road linking Iowa Street and Kansas Turnpike access road

Work was nearly completed on improvements to a link between Iowa Street and the Kansas Turnpike access road. Large-truck traffic was expected to increase in that area with the opening of the Kresge warehouse.

The $1 million dollar Kansas Union fire was still under investigation. The assistant state fire marshal said that the case would remain open indefinitely until more was known about it.

Nearly a week of rainy weather had brought the year’s rainfall total to slightly above average. An expected 40,000 Kansas and Texas Tech fans were due to have dry weather for the upcoming football game.

A KU Medical Center professor and pathologist was seeking permission to examine clothing and other evidence of the assassination of President Kennedy for a book he was hoping to write. He wanted to subject certain bullet fragments to “neutron activation analysis” to see if they were from different bullets. He said that his planned book was intended to “clarify” the Warren Commission report.
