University Bridge Club announces results of its Sept. 11 meeting with hosts Karmie and Edna Galle.

Blue winners were Al Smith, first; Florence McNicoll, second; Willie Stoltenberg, third; John Stark, fourth; and Ray Ikenberry, fifth.

Pink winners were Willi Stark, first; Carol Smith, second; Karen Zimmerer, third; Alice Akin, fourth; and Hazel Stellmacher, fifth.

Pam Eglinski, of the Lawrence Rotary Club, will leave Sept. 28 for Adelaide, Australia, with a team of four professionals from eastern Kansas on a Group Study Exchange for the month of October. The team members, ranging in age from 27 to 35, will stay with Rotarians in Rotary District 9500, which encompasses most of South Australia. This exchange is one of the activities Rotary International sponsors as part of its mission to promote worldwide peace and understanding.

Team leader Eglinski is retired from a career in fundraising and development. She worked for the KU Endowment Association and the Spencer Museum of Art, then for several arts organizations in Kansas City. Since her retirement she has become a professional writer. Having relatives in Mongolia, Eglinski has set her first novel there, and is hoping to find material for another book on this trip.

Team member Traci Fruit of Ottawa is a graduate of Washburn University. She is a special agent with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, in the drug enforcement unit and will be meeting with Australian law enforcement units.

Sarah Laib of Topeka is a youth development agent for 4-H, via the K-State Research and Extension unit. Like several team members, Laib’s interested in learning about youth programs in Australia and in experiencing the culture and sights there.

Chris Meiers of Kansas City, Kan., is the associate dean of students/registrar at the Kansas University Medical Center. He just completed his Ph.D. in research, educational measurement and statistics at KU. Meiers will visit hospitals and academic medical centers.

Ryan Wright of Lawrence works in Topeka, where he’s director of development for the Kansas Action for Children. A political science graduate of Kansas State University, once worked as press secretary for Congressman Jerry Moran. Wright’s interested in children’s health, and children’s advocacy, as well as legislative and lobbying activities in Australia.

The team formed four months ago, has been meeting since June, and has already started a blog for their trip, 5710aus.blogspot.com.

The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Sept. 8 was directed by Chris Lane. North-South winners were Larry Weatherholt and Fred Dischman, first in A; John Oxley and Klee Zaricky, second in A; Clarice Broz and Marilyn Martin, third in A, and first in B and C; Nita Scales and Lester Dalton tied for fourth in A with Kent McCullough and John Fittell; and Scales and Dalton, were also second in B.

East-West winners were Ed Howard and Bobby Patton, first in A; Shari Kentzel and Eldon Herd, second in A and first in B; Carol Ball and Mona Bell third in A, second in B, and first in C; and Grant Sutton and Catherine Blumenfeld, fourth in A and third in B.

The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Sept. 10 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Wanda Durbin and Mary Fenlon, first in A; Julia Dalton and Lester Dalton, second in A and first in B; Steven Vossler and Larry Weatherholt, third in A; and Vince Nordberg and Catherine Blumenfeld fourth in A, second in B, and first in C.

East-West winners were Mona Bell and Lois Clark, first in A and B; Shirley Reese and Yvonne Hedges, second in A and B; Eldon Herd and Jean Otney, third in A and B; David Piro and Paul Heitzman, fourth in A; and Dick Shaffer and Jack Flickinger, first in C.

The Monday Evening Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Sept. 13 utilized the Howell movement and was directed by Virginia Seaver. Winners were Jerry Sloan and Grant Sutton, first in A; Paul Heitzman and Virginia Seaver, second in A; Jan O’Connor and Bobby Patton, third in A and first in B; and Jim Stewart and Vince Nordberg, fourth in A and second in B.
