KU soccer clips Oregon, 1-0

? Kansas University’s Emily Cressy scored in the 85th minute to give the Jayhawks a 1-0 victory over Oregon on Sunday in UNLV’s Rebel Classic.

Cressy had six shots, three on goal and Whitney Berry three shots, one on goal, as KU improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 at the tourney. Berry also had an assist.

With five minutes left, Berry raced to the ball at midfield and crossed it from the left to Cressy in the middle of the box. With the goalkeeper already down trying to put a stop to the ball, Cressy shot high and laced it over the Ducks’ Lindsay Parlee for the dramatic victory. The game-winner was Cressy’s 10th of her career, and it was the second time in as many weeks that the redshirt-junior forward has broken through in the final minutes of the game.

Goalkeeper Kat Liebetrau collected 11 saves while recording her second shutout. She had a diving stop in the final minute.

“Today, we created more scoring opportunities than we have all season,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “The girls played really hard and I think across the board, every single person that stepped on the field did a really good job.”

KU totaled 13 shots against an Oregon team that fell to 0-2 in the event and 2-3-2 overall.

“It was a really good win for us on the road against a good team,” Francis said. “This weekend we talked to them about competing and maintaining focus.”

The win was just the second victory over a Pac-10 team since 1998.

Kansas now returns home for two games, starting Friday against UW-Milwaukee, and Sunday with local foe Missouri State.
