The sound of gunshots near 10th and New Hampshire streets about 2 a.m. Sunday spurred an investigation by the Lawrence police.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Bronson Star, a Lawrence police officer heard multiple shots fired in the area of the 1000 block of New Hampshire. Star said the shots came from the Berkley Plaza parking lot next to Maceli's, where a large gathering was taking place.

Star said an investigation revealed that someone pulled a gun in the parking lot and fired multiple shots. Police located gun casings in the lot. No injuries have been reported at this time, and there are no suspects in the case.

Your commitment to the art of trolling is admirable, though your execution could use some work.

Some high-spirited community organizers of the future.....

Bea, isn't it amazing how people will latch onto a single snide bumpersticker sort of comment and raise it as a flag for TWO years when trying to make a statement without being overtly racist, bigoted and ignorant? Every time that banner is waved, thousands of people who passionate about making a better world are insulted and devalued.

The sad thing is, community organizers are the very core of our democratic process and are the backbone of our civilized society. They bring the voices of hugely diverse groups to the attention of local, state and federal government and educating the rest of us of the efforts of all kinds of people to have an impact on the world. What are the PTAs of our schools, the NRA, Unions, political parties but community organizations lead by community organizers? Some take on the plight of the poor, some work for the betterment of their neighborhoods and schools, some work with charitable organizations to bring us cures for disease, help people adopt children, or provide much of the financing for arts and research from which we all get some benefit.

How dare ANYONE make this honorable activity a target for derision.

With the students back, we have our fair share of stupid people. About to the point we need the National Guard out to help downtown police when the bars let out. Do they still do the one weekend a month thing? 2AM downtown is good training.

Students? Really, srj? More likely it was thugs along the lines of "somebody done me wrong".

Steve runs a good place but that gathering is a problem every year. When it let's out the police always have to come and clear the street. There is always fights and they leave the parking lot a mess. Now gun fire. Steve fix this. We do not need a private "Last Call"

Guns are fine. They just shouldn't come into contact with people.

What the crap is a "gun casing?" I've heard of shell cases, but never "gun casings."

one can be certain that the ignorant shooter was not a CCW-permit holder.
situation like this makes me wish again for the following: lpd should have videocams atop various downtown buildings. also atop those buildings would be high-intensity water cannons.
videocam monitor sees group with little thuggy going off, directs the fire of one or more water cannons.
or, the water cannons could instead be loaded with: honey; shaving cream; pepper spray; salt peter; or witchhazel. or, a combo of the whole list without the water. better than a drone.

You want the police to mount high-pressure honey cannons atop buildings downtown?

Next to a steering wheel in the hands of a drunk a gun is next worse thing. To much macho for an alcohol influnced, gun toting, ganster want-to-be to handle. Just had to let someone know just how powerful he was. There really aren't words that would accurately express the level of ignorance with the performance of this act. Guns being fired into the air aren't really a problem, they just make a flash and noise. Its the bullets raining down who knows where that is really the part that makes no sense at all. Especially in a city. Your thumb and trigger finger should be removed from your dominate hand for a deed such as this. The next time the other hand. Since these individuals refuse to use their head, we should disable the rest of the gun shooting ability. Very, very stupid!
