40 years ago: Mobile home park breaks ground

Washington State football coach Jim Sweeney and his team had arrived in Kansas City and had immediately headed to Lawrence to work out on the new Tartan Turf surface at Memorial Stadium in preparation for their upcoming game with KU. “We’ve never played on Tartan before,” Sweeney said, “but I like it. It’s so quiet. It’s like walking on the moon. We play on AstroTurf back home and you can hear it when you run on it. It makes a squish-squash sound.”

Ground had been broken for the first phase of construction of what was expected to become the second largest mobile homes park in Kansas. Mobile Acres South, located at 3300 Iowa, was to cover 64 acres with 406 units, a clubhouse, two swimming pools, and a large recreation area.
