100 years ago: Fishing party rudely interrupted

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 12, 1910: “Although suits may now be obtained from the gymnasium, actual football practice for the season of 1910 will not commence until Wednesday. Coach Kennedy made this announcement this morning. Already the offices of the man who has given Kansas a victorious team so repeatedly that it has been familiarly dubbed the ‘Yale of the West’ is swarming with football enthusiasts. All are eagerly seeking reliable information regarding the season’s prospects…. The call of the school bell in Lawrence this morning was heard with mingled feelings of regret, relief, and agonized foreboding. Among the teachers, who have spend the summer in gaily peopled lake resorts, its sound provoked a sigh of regret for the lazy days of leisure already succeeded by the sickening grind of the dreary school room…. A fishing party with an ample supply of old fashioned bait was rudely interrupted Saturday night by Chief Herd and a bunch of police. The raid netted a gunny sack, plenty of cracked ice and 18 bottles of Lemp beer. The bit of Kansas City environment was discovered near the sand pit at the Santa Fe.”
