Record corn crop in Kansas is predicted

? Forecasters have scaled back their prediction for this year’s Kansas corn crop but still expect it to set a record.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service is now predicting Kansas farmers will harvest 607.2 million bushels of corn. That’s down from the 629.2 million bushels predicted in August’s forecast but would still be 1 percent bigger than last year’s record crop.

Kansas farmers put in 4.7 million acres of corn this year, the most since 1936.

The agency also pegged Kansas soybean production at 145.8 million bushels. That would be down 9 percent from a year ago, but still the second highest production ever for the state if realized.

The sorghum harvest was forecast at 180 million bushels, or about 20 percent lower than last year.
