40 years ago: Nixon visit to Kansas State announced

White House officials and Kansas State University president James McCain made a joint announcement that President Nixon was going to visit the KSU campus to deliver the first Landon lecture of the 1970-71 academic year. Secret Service agents and Nixon aides were already on the campus making arrangements for the visit. Coverage was expected to be the largest for any event in KSU’s history. Nixon was the first President to visit the KSU campus while in office. (Dwight Eisenhower delivered Landon lectures both before and after he was president.)

Meanwhile, President Nixon moved to place armed guards aboard international and some domestic flights of U.S. airlines to counter “aerial piracy” or hijacking. Additionally, surveillance of passengers and their baggage was to be greatly increased.
