25 years ago: Baseball, soccer added to sports program at LHS

In spite of objections from two of seven members, the Lawrence school board voted to add baseball and soccer to the sports program at Lawrence High School. Jane Rutledge and Mary Lou Wright dissented, saying that the money for the baseball program would be better used for academics. Starting the boys’ baseball program was expected to cost from $5,700 to $5,900, with additional yearly costs for coaches, game officials, and transportation.

About 25 parents from the Deerfield School area were happy about a school board decision to provide a bus to transport their children, who lived within two miles of the school but had to cross Kasold Drive when walking there. The parents had presented a petition to the board the previous April asking them to provide the service.
