40 years ago: Future highway development posing concern

At a meeting with members of the Kansas State Highway Commission, city commissioners were presented with a “generally bleak” picture about the possibility of future highway development in Lawrence and Douglas County. Under discussion were proposed improvements to U.S. 59 south of 23rd Street and to Highway K-10 from Lawrence into Johnson County. The city had also presented a plan which included a bypass to the south, swinging near the proposed Clinton Reservoir. The state highway commissioners said that since most of the traffic in the area was not through traffic – that it was either bound for Lawrence or leaving Lawrence for another destination – the construction of a bypass was probably not warranted. However, the highway commission offered possible reasons for future development, including the growth of a major population center in Johnson County or an upswing in “recreational traffic” heading for Perry Reservoir and the future Clinton Reservoir.
